SWY 19 - Preparation

Has your image of the program changed during the course of preparation?

During the course of preparation for SWY19, my perception of the program has changed incredibly.  As an applicant during the summer, I viewed SWY as an amazing opportunity to travel the world and to meet people from different cultures.  However, over the course of the past couple months, I have come to realize that SWY19 will not only be an amazing opportunity, but a lifechanging experience.  One where the meeting of people from different cultures will challenge my own morals and beliefs; One where I hold immense responsibility to represent Canada in the best possible light; And one where upon my return to Canada, I will not see the world in the same light.  I can't  wait.  -Monica, SWY 19

How did the delegation prepare for the program?
I'm often asked by family and friends, "Are you ready for SWY?"  Truth be  told, at times, I am at a loss of words because I don't think anyone can be truly prepared for what we are about to experience.

That said, on a personal level, I have made a considerable effort to learn as much about the other participating countries as much as possible.  In addition, I have researched and prepared seminars about Canadian culture to present on SWY19.  In particular, I have chosen to share my love of hiphop culture, as well as my passion for the Canadian non-profit sector.

As a delegation, our preparation was challenged by our geographical disparities.  Whereas many delegations on board will have already met for months prior to SWY19, we were unable to do so due to the fact that all of us were scattered around the country.  As a result, much of our preparations took place over email and phone (thank god for skype!).  In the past couple months, we have tackled everything from the Canada Party and the National Presentation, to sponsorship and uniforms.  At times, it's certainly been a huge challenge, but I must attest to the fact that it's been hugely rewarding as well.  It's all part of the SWY experience!  - Monica, SWY 19
