SWY 18 - The Basics

Each delegate is assigned to a variety of groups, including Course
Discussion, Letter Groups, Club and Volunteer Activities.
Course discussion
"I
was part of the Volunteerism Course and Discussion facilitated by
the beautiful and very inspiring Andra Moss from New York and,
sincerely, I had a blast!"
- Mylene SWY 18
"Incredible. I was in the UN course
and I loved it. I learned a lot about UN structure and policy and I
appreciated the flexibility we had in molding the course structure
to our needs. The initial sessions were heavily lecture based,
but we were able to structure many of the sessions around
interactive discussions, heated debates, role-playing, skits, and
even a mock/model UN General Assembly. I learned a lot about UN
security council reform and I appreciated learning from the input
and experience of my fellow course members." -

"I believe that the Course and
Discussion becomes what you make of it. It's an opportunity to learn
about other ways of thinking, living, looking at issues and trying
to solve problems; all of which takes place in a very respectful
environment." -
Mylene SWY 18
"Youth Development: It was difficult to get into in depth discussions about topics as the levels of English varied greatly. It was very interesting to hear about the issues and programs set up in other countries." - Aimee SWY 18
"I was also empowered by this course
with the knowledge and tools needed to become a much more active
global citizen and help bring my own projects at home to the next
level." - Mylene SWY 18
Letter Groups
Each letter group has one member
from each overseas delegation for various activities and
administrative functions.
Letter groups met each day and took turns coordinating the daily
wake up call, morning assembly, and night patrol.

Club activities
"Clubs
coordinated by PYs and held during 'official time' - the majority of
these are focused on dances from different cultures, including
Japanese Geisha, Soran and Sansa-odori, Polynesian and Mauritian
dance, and Japanese drumming." - Adam, SWY 18

Voluntary activities
Diverse workshops, seminars, films and activities
coordinated by participating youth and
held during free time.
Through these I learned about Sho-doh (Japanese calligraphy), photography, group facilitation, trauma psychology, cross-cultural sexuality, philosophy for children, the atomic bomb and its aftermaths, yoga, bahraini weaving, the list goes on...

Delegation responsibilities
Delegations from each country
are responsible for a National Presentation and an
official party.
The National
Presentations are very large undertakings, more like shows than
presentations. The parties are usually held on the pool deck, with
free alcohol, food and dance and games.
