When can I apply?

The Government of Japan decides which countries are invited in April or May of each year.  Countries are officially invited and if Canada is invited, we will begin promoting the program in early summer.  The last few programs have sailed in January, in which case the application deadline in Canada will likely be late August.  When Canada is invited, we will post an updated application form on our website and SWAP's website (Student Work Abroad Program) for those interested in applying.

What are the countries visited?

Typically, the program stops in three or four countries during each program, not including Japan or refueling stops.

Indian Ocean trips have stopped in places such as Cape Town, SA; Mombasa, Kenya; Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania; Chennai, India; Victoria, Seychelles; and Dubai, United Arab Emirates;

Pacific Ocean trips have stopped at destinations such as Cairns or Sydney, Australia; Fiji; Tonga; Tahiti; New Zealand; Acapulco, Mexico; Vancouver, B.C.; and Honolulu, U.S.A.

The Government of Japan decides the route and countries that will be visited each year. At each port a cultural exchange takes place, usually with a welcome from the host country, which is reciprocated by the delegations, Participants visit significant places such as schools, museums, art houses, and cultural centres. Local organizations often arrange a sport event with local youth and there is usually free time to admire the sites and go shopping.

Who can I contact for more information?

The previous participants of the program are responsible for promoting the program and coordinating the selection process.  It is run by volunteers and we do not have an office or phone number for the organization.  If you have any questions, please review the website to see if the answer is already provided.  For any other questions, you can e-mail info@swycanada.org and we will do our best to respond in a timely manner.

What kind of applicants or skills are desired by the Selection Committee?

The Selection Committee tries to choose a group that represents Canada.  We do not have set numbers of delegates chosen from each province or region, but will avoid having sending a delegation that does not have a native French speaker or visible minorities.  The delegation usually ranges from 18 - 30+ with people coming from the arts, athletics, health, business, politics or people working in their communities.  It is not important what you're background is, or how much experience you have, it all depends on how involved passionate you are in your community or area of interest.

What does the program cost?

The Government of Japan very generously covers the costs of the program that include:

  • Return flight from the nearest international airport in Canada.

  • Admission and activity fees for everything organized for the program.

  • Food on board the Nippon Maru, ports of call and most meals in Japan.

  • Accommodation (hotels and home-stay in Japan and on board ship)

Costs borne by the participants include money for souvenirs and snacks for the duration of the program, medical insurance and any expenses incurred during free time in each port of call.
